Forgiving Those Who Seek to Destroy You

Someone spreads rumors about you. Someone pounces on you and tries to destroy your reputation. Someone twists the words you have said or the words others have said about you. It’s tempting to seek revenge. It’s tempting to imagine all sort of judgments falling on this person. I know because I’ve experienced this type of ruthless behavior from people who call themselves Christians. I’ve wondered when God would ever stand up and defend me against the lies being told about me.

The Bible says that we reap what we sow. However, I haven’t seen that happen yet. Sometimes people don’t reap what they sow until years later. I have to go on living and enjoying my life. I have to let go and remember that God wants to bless me with his peace and joy.

Today I read this verse from the Bible: “But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth” (Colossians 3:8). My hurt is deep because I have been slandered by people I’ve tried to help. Yet God still tells me to put away my anger and malice. After reading those verses I prayed, “God, you told me to put away anger, wrath, malice, and slander. Since you have asked me to do this, then I am asking you for help. If we ask anything according to your will, then you give us the desires of our heart. I know it’s your will for me to put away anger, but I need your help to do it. When I think about the pain people have caused me, help me to put it out of my mind. Give me wisdom for dealing with these people. I don’t want to be a dart board, absorbing the darts other people aim at me. But, I don’t want to be filled with anger. Show me how to respond to these people, and help me to leave their judgment up to you. Amen.”
