Jeremy Lin, rising star in the NBA, fought self-doubt and anxiety on his rise to the top. Despite a stellar high school career where he led his team to the Division II state title, Lin was overlooked by major schools such as UCLA. Some schools offered walk on possibilities, but no one, except Harvard and Brown, guaranteed him a place on the basketball team. Gifted with brains and a hard work ethic, Lin persevered and shone on Harvard’s courts setting records and gaining recognition for his versatility. Surely it was time for the NBA. However, at the end of the 2010 NBA draft, Lin remained undrafted.
Committed to improving his skills, Lin joined the NBA Summer League. His dramatic performance garnered attention and he was offered a contract from four teams, including the Warriors, his hometown team. After his signing, Lin’s popularity grew exponentially, partly due to the fact that he is the first NBA player who is both American and of Chinese or Taiwanese descent. Crowds, especially the Asian-American community, chanted and cheered as he played.
His applause and pressure to succeed continued to increase, but his stability decreased. Change became part of his daily diet as Lin played for three different teams in a year. Feelings of self-doubt and anxiety began to grow. Lin confessed, “Sometimes you come up against a mountain and you end up making the mountain seem bigger than God.” In order to cope with the stress of life in the NBA, Lin began pursuing his relationship with God with more intensity. And in the process, he found peace. Lin said, “I was on pins and needles. I was putting all this unnecessary pressure on myself. Now, I feel like I’m free out there.” Lin contributes this new-found freedom, this inner peace, as a contributing factor to Linsanity, his insane rise to stardom.
Lin found peace in the turbulent world of the NBA by turning to God. It unleashed in him the freedom to succeed on the court. How can God’s peace and the relationship you have with him change your life?
